Horsebox & Mobile Sauna Conversions in Fife

We turn old horseboxes into fully working mobile saunas, built by hand in our Kelty workshop. Every conversion gets a proper Harvia stove, cedar cladding inside and out, and bespoke benching made to fit the space. If you’re after a barrel sauna alternative that’s road ready and built to last, this is what we do best.

How We Convert a Horsebox Into a Mobile Sauna

Every horsebox sauna conversion starts the same way: with the box itself. We check the frame, the floor and the wheel arches before anything else, because a sauna is only as good as the structure carrying it. Once we know what we’re working with, we strip it back and start planning the layout around the stove, the benching and how many people it needs to fit.

Inside, we line the walls and ceiling with cedar. It’s not just for looks. Cedar handles heat and moisture far better than most timbers, which matters a lot inside a small, enclosed space that’s going to get hot several times a week. We fit a Harvia stove in each build, insulate properly behind the panelling, and build the benching by hand so it actually fits the box rather than being bolted in as an afterthought. It’s the same care we’d put into any bespoke fitted furniture job, just applied to something that also needs to survive being towed down the road.

We’ve been doing this kind of hands-on carpentry and conversion work since 2022, right here in Kelty, and every horsebox that comes through the workshop gets finished by the same person who designed it. That matters more than people expect. A mobile sauna needs to be built by someone who understands both joinery and how the thing will actually be used, whether that’s parked in a garden, towed to events, or hired out. We build ours to be lived in, not just looked at.

About the workshop

Horsebox Sauna Conversions, Built to Become a Proper Mobile Sauna

A trailer sauna has a hard job. It gets towed down bumpy roads, heated to around 90°C, left to cool, then heated again the following week. Ordinary cladding screwed to a bare shell won’t survive that for long.

That’s why every horsebox sauna conversion we do gets stripped right back first: treated, framed, insulated and properly sealed before a single piece of cedar goes in. It’s what keeps the box dry inside and the heat where it’s meant to be.

From there, everything gets built around you. Bench height, stove position, glazing, lighting, the layout of the changing space, all of it gets planned to suit how you’ll actually use the sauna, not fitted to a generic template.

You’ll speak to the same person from the first conversation right through to the final fit-out, since we don’t hand jobs between different tradespeople partway through. One pair of hands, one build, start to finish.

Who It's For

Mobile Sauna Conversions Built for Home or Business

Some of our customers want a mobile sauna sitting quietly in the garden, ready whenever they fancy it. Others are running a hire business and need something that can be towed to weddings, events or campsites without falling apart after a few trips. We build for both. Every horsebox conversion is finished to the same standard, whether it’s staying on your driveway or working for a living.

At Home in the Garden

If you want a sauna without giving up space to a permanent build, a converted horsebox does the job well. It's insulated properly, easy to heat, and simple to maintain once it's in place. Most owners just need a quick check over before each season, nothing more involved than that.

On the Road for Business

Running a mobile sauna business means your build needs to survive constant use and constant towing. We reinforce the areas that take the most strain and finish the interior so it's easy to clean between bookings. It's built to earn its keep, not just look good for the photos.

What Goes Into a Horsebox Sauna Conversion

No two horseboxes come to us in quite the same state, and no two customers want exactly the same thing out of the finished sauna. But once you’ve done enough of these conversions, a pattern starts to emerge in where the real work actually happens. Here’s roughly how a typical build breaks down, stage by stage.

Structural Prep & Stripping the Box

The first stage is always the least glamorous and the most important. We strip the horsebox back to its shell, check the frame, floor and wheel arches for rot or weak points, and sort out anything that needs reinforcing before it becomes a sauna. Skip this bit, and everything built on top of it is on borrowed time.

Insulation, Vapour Sealing & Cedar Lining

Once the shell is sound, we insulate properly and vapour seal it so the heat stays inside where it’s needed, rather than escaping through the walls or causing damp further down the line. Cedar goes in after that, chosen because it copes far better with heat and moisture than most other timbers, which matters when the same space is going from cold to 90°C on a regular basis.

Stove Fitting & Bespoke Benching

We fit a Harvia stove in every build and position it to suit the layout of that particular box. Benching is built by hand around it, sized to fit the space rather than bought off the shelf, so seating actually works for however many people the sauna is meant to hold.

Glazing, Lighting & Final Finish

Last comes the detail that makes it feel finished: glazing for natural light, interior lighting suited to a sauna environment, and any final touches like changing space or external cladding. It’s the stage where a horsebox stops looking like a conversion project and starts looking like a proper mobile sauna.

How we work

Three steps. No surprises.

We follow the same simple process on every horsebox sauna conversion, from that first look at your box through to final handover, so you always know what’s happening and what it’s going to cost.

01

Consult

We come out to see the horsebox in person, talk through what you want the finished sauna to look like, and take proper measurements before anything gets planned.

02

Quote

You get a detailed written quote covering materials, labour and a realistic timeline, so there’s nothing vague and nothing sprung on you halfway through the build.

03

Build

The conversion is carried out by the owner, on site, kept tidy throughout, with regular updates so you’re never left wondering how things are progressing.

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions.

Can’t see your question? Drop a note in the enquiry form and we’ll come back the same day.

How long does a horsebox sauna conversion take?

Most conversions take between six and ten weeks, depending on the size of the box and how much structural work is needed before we can start fitting it out. We’ll give you a realistic timeline as part of your written quote, so there’s nothing vague about it once the build starts.

Is a horsebox conversion better than a barrel sauna?

It depends what you’re after. A barrel sauna is cheaper and quicker to install, but it’s fixed in one spot. A converted horsebox gives you a mobile sauna you can tow to events, hire out, or move around your own property, and you get to shape the layout, benching and finish exactly how you want it.

How do I maintain a mobile sauna once it's built?

Day to day, it’s simple. Wipe down the benches after use, keep the stove area clear, and let the box air out between sessions to stop moisture building up. Once a year, it’s worth checking the seals, the towing components and the exterior finish, much the same as you’d look after any trailer that’s out in the weather.

Can you convert any horsebox into a sauna?

Most horseboxes can be converted, but the frame and floor need to be sound enough to build on. We check the structure during the first site visit and flag anything that needs sorting before we quote, so there are no surprises once work begins.

Do you supply the stove and materials, or do I need to source them?

We handle everything, the Harvia stove, cedar cladding, insulation and benching are all included as part of the build. You don’t need to source or manage separate suppliers, it’s all covered in the quote from the start.
