Loft Ladders & Loft Boarding in Fife

Most lofts are full of useful space that’s hard to reach and unsafe to stand in. We fit loft ladders and loft boarding across Fife, turning the loft into proper, safe storage, for homes in Kelty, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Inverkeithing, Rosyth, Kinross and the villages in between.

Safe Loft Access and Proper Boarded Storage

A good loft conversion for storage starts with access. We fit timber, aluminium and concertina loft ladders, and can enlarge or move the hatch if the existing one is too small or in the wrong place. Every ladder is fitted to suit your ceiling height and the space around the hatch.

Then the boarding. Laying boards straight onto the joists squashes the insulation and makes it far less effective, so we raise the floor on loft legs or a timber sub-frame, keeping the insulation at full depth with an air gap above it. The result is a firm, flat floor that’s safe to stand and store on.

We can also add a light, a handrail at the hatch and a simple safety balustrade, so getting in and out is easy for the whole family.

About the workshop

Loft Boarding Done Right, Insulation Left Working

The most common mistake we see is boards nailed straight to the joists over compressed insulation, which leads to heat loss and condensation. Raised boarding keeps the insulation working and spreads the load across the joists.

We’ll check the joists, existing insulation and any wiring before quoting, and tell you honestly how much of the loft can sensibly be boarded and how much weight it can carry.

Who It's For

Which Loft Option Is Right for You

Some customers just want a ladder and a boarded strip for Christmas decorations. Others want the whole loft boarded with lighting for regular storage. We’ll quote for exactly what you need.

Loft Ladder Installation

Timber, aluminium or concertina loft ladders, with new or enlarged hatches where needed, fitted safely to your ceiling height.

Raised Loft Boarding

Loft legs or a timber sub-frame keep insulation at full depth, with a solid boarded floor on top for safe storage.

What Goes Into a Loft Ladder & Boarding Job

We start with a survey of the loft: hatch size, joist direction and spacing, insulation depth and any services in the way. Then we agree the ladder type and how much floor to board. On the day, the hatch is formed or adjusted, the ladder fitted, the raised supports and boards laid, and the work area left clean.

Most jobs are completed in one or two days, depending on the size of the loft and whether the hatch needs moving.

FAQ

Frequently Ask Questions.

Can’t see your question? Drop a note in the enquiry form and we’ll come back the same day.

Can you board a loft without squashing the insulation?

Yes. We use loft legs or a raised timber frame so the insulation stays at full depth beneath the boards.

How much weight can loft boarding take?

It depends on the joists and how the boarding is supported. We check this on the survey and advise what the loft can sensibly store.

Can you make my loft hatch bigger?

Yes. Hatches can usually be enlarged or moved to suit a new loft ladder, subject to the joist layout.

Which loft ladder is best?

Timber ladders are warm and sturdy, aluminium ladders are light and slim, and concertina ladders suit small hatches. We’ll recommend the best fit for your space.

Which areas of Fife do you cover?

We cover Kelty, Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath, Lochgelly, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Inverkeithing, Rosyth, Kinross and the villages in between.
